311’mc – Post 11 – Interim Critique 1

•February 24, 2010 • Leave a Comment

So today we all had our first interim critique, I had mine with Philip Draycott, I showed him my Recce pictures, told him about my location, about what I had planned in the way of a storyline. He replied that he is worried that it will just be a few men running around shooting their guns, I assured him that they look the part and that it wont be them running around shooting aimlessly, that it will have a structure and that it will have a mix of documentary and drama. He seemed wary but happy to let me continue with my production.

Wyre Forest – Drama Documentary intro:

Walking through the leisure trail of the forest, maybe people passing by, then turn to camera.

Craig Powis

This truly is a wonderful place, a fantastic family retreat and a leisure trail too. many people from neighboring French towns and further a field, come here to get away from the stress of work and relax in this fabulous nature reserve. (PAUSE)

Shot of the place. Perhaps look up into the sky with the camera and fade out and then back in when I continue talking.

CRAIG POWIS

You would never believe that a few decades ago the scene here (Pause-look around) was very very  different.

Perhaps walking down a path camera in front talking to camera.

CRAIG POWIS

Just down here was encamped many German soldiers. With a prime object, to engage and defeat a large invading force.

Perhaps sitting down on a bench.

CRAIG POWIS

The allies as we know had landed on the beaches of Normandy on the 6th of June 1944.

Perhaps start off with the camera looking around.

CRAIG POWIS

This very spot we are at now had to be defended against the allied invading forces. With the object of pushing the allied forces back into the English channel which would stop them advancing across Europe and finally attacking German soil.

CRAIG POWIS

My story today is about one such German company encamped here. The 2nd Kompanie Panzer Grenadiers,”Der Windhund” in particularly seen through the eyes of one of the members of that division. Otto Kauffman.

EXT.Ashdown world war 2 camp Evesham

SCENE 1.0 August 1944

These scenes are titled Pickup Otto. In scene 1.0 OTTO KAUFMANN is walking down an old country road, heading towards the French town of “St. Lambert” 150 Km west of Paris. A German frontline position where 2nd kompanie Der Windhund were encamped to defend against the Allies breakout from Normandy. He was heading back to war after a long spell of convalescence in a hospital for German soldiers on the outskirts of Paris, he looks at a picture of his family to remind him of what he is fighting for and a life he had in the seemingly distant past.

SCENE 1.1

In this scene you see a point of view shot from Obergefreiter Claus Richter as he is driving a German motorcycle combo on route to town “St.Lambert”. He stops next to his friend Otto, they greet each other and Otto climbs in and they both drive off.

Claus Richter

“You are one sorry looking soldier you know that.”

OTTO KAUFMANN

“Ha Ha I see nothing ever changes. How are you my old friend?”

CLAUS RICHTER

“I am good considering the worlds gone mad…….. You getting in, or are you going to walk all the way and hope the yanks surrender before you get there?”

OTTO KAUFMANN

“Like you my friend, Iam getting to old for all this bullshit, so I  best make the most of what little comforts I can get.”

SCENE 1.2

In this scene you simply see Otto putting his equipment and rifle in the motorcycle combo and Otto climbing in.

SCENE 1.3

This scene is simply a shot from behind of both them driving off.

SCENE 1.4

In this scene you have a point of view shot of Otto seeing new recruits walking to the German frontline position as he drives past.

SCENE 2.0 + 2.1

In this scene you see Otto is woken up by Claus, they have arrived, you see Otto jump out the motorcycle combo.

CLAUS RICHTER

“Otto were here….. You best report to the Oberleutnant.”

SCENE 2.2

In this scene Otto heads over to Oberleutnant Wilm Kuschel who is giving orders to another soldier, Otto reports for duty. At this point you can hear mortar fire in the distance and behind Oberleutnant Wilm Kuschel you can see other recruits arriving in Motorcycles and other Kublewagens. Oberleutnant Wilm Kuschel gives Otto his orders and Otto walks off to settle back in.

OBERLEUTNANT WILM KUSCHEL

“Just get it done.” (speaking to another solder & then turns towards Otto)

OTTO KAUFMANN

“Kaufmann reporting for duty sir.”(Salutes)

OBERLEUTNANT WILM KUSCHEL

“Good to have you back Kaufmann. How was Paris?……I hope you are feeling rested, god only knows when any of us we will ever get any rest in the future. You best get settled in as soon as you can and get something to eat, the field kitchen has managed to find a good source of meat, where from….. I don’t want to think about.”

OTTO KAUFMANN

“Yes Sir.”(Salutes)

SCENE 2.3

Otto heads over to the Field Kitchen when he runs into old friend Kurt Hoffman, they start talking about recent events, Paris etc. Otto takes equipment off at the encampment/field kitchen. In runs Pioneer Adam Guldan and reporting to the Obergefreiter Claus Richter, tells him:

Adam Guldan

“Oberleutnant  Kuschel requires you and your men to report to him at once“.

The Obergefreiter Claus Richter turns to his men and gathers them up saying:

CLAUS RICHTER

“come we have to report to the command tent for our orders”.

kurt hoffman

“Ah, well its good to see you back with us Otto. How was Paris?, plenty of good women and wine I should think yes?”

OTTO KAUFMANN

“You know how it is, a little of both is good for you.”

KURT HOFFMAN

“Have you heard that BAYER was killed?”

OTTO KAUFMANN

“I heard about that. (PAUSE) Not many of the old group left now. I see the Reich is sending children as new recruits now, they can’t churn out recruits fast enough for this slaughter.”

CLAUS RICHTER

“Come on you two, the Oberleutnant wants us at the command tent now!!”

Turning towards clause and says:

KURT HOFFMAN

 “Were coming now”.

Back to Otto and says:

kurt Hoffman

“lets see what they have in store for us now”.

SCENE 2.4

In this scene OBERLEUTNANT tells the three in his command tent that he requires them to deploy a probing patrol across the front line to find out where the enemy are pushing through. He points to areas on a map and says:

OBERLEUTNANT WILM KUSCHEL

“I require you to deploy a probing patrol here. Find out where the allies are pushing through and report back….. Don’t try to take prisoners this time…we don’t have the means to look after them or the food to feed them

ALL

“Yes Sir” (Salutes from all)

Claus Richter assembles his patrol, they get their equipment together and march off into the forest.

SCENE 3

On patrol in stealth throughout the forest, gunfire and explosions in the distance can be heard. They are going and getting closer to the action. Then suddenly gunfire is spitting in their direction along with mortar fire, the patrol has been detected and come under fire.

Unknown character

Incoming!! (Yelled)

CLAUS RICHTER

Take cover” !! (Yelled)

The patrol dive for cover and returns fire in the direction of the incoming, not actually seeing the enemy at this time, but in response to it in a grip of controlled fear. After two minutes or more, two American solders can just be made out within the undergrowth ahead of the patrol firing upon the patrols positions.

CLAUS RICHTER

Fall back, we need to report back, we have the information we require. Every man for himself shnell!!.”

scene 3.1

With this the patrol fights a retreating withdrawal, tree by tree back to their own lines were upon reaching them, they find the encampment under fire from a much larger company of American soldiers.

A defence position is taken up by the Germans fighting in and around a fortified concrete gun post. (scenes inside: of machine gun & loader including riflemen. Outside of riflemen & MP40 armed soldiers defending with a chaotic response. This gun battle runs on for a short while with many German causalities (injured and dead) lying around.

The last remaining inside the Concrete gun post, kurt,Otto,Clause,Oberleutnant and two others decide that a final act of madness for the Fatherland is the only action they can now take.

OBERLEUTNANT WILM KUSCHEL

“Men its been an honour serving with you, (drawing his pistol) try to breakout and rejoin the Battalion heading east towards Montormel…….. good luck”.

“Fix Bayonets!!”

With a slight hesitation from the men, they join their commanding officer, surging forward from the gun post like men possessed, forward towards the enemy with bayonets poised towards a final charge. Voicing their aggression in a yelling-charging manner, in a line like wall of defiance, they face the oncoming enemy.

The scene is frozen……..music of a Germanic march……………then fades into sombre music & the credits come up.

311’mc – Post 6 – Meeting the Group at Stoneleigh

•January 31, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Today I met “Der Windhund” group at Stoneleigh Milliatria Show, (http://www.militariashows.com/) we agreed to meet here as it the first show for re-enactors of the year, We had a meeting about my idea, I drew up a skeleton flow diagram, showing roughly what would be happening on each scene, The Camera angles and the idea around the scene, what I want to achieve from the scene. We also talked about props, vehicles, pyrotechnics and locations. I have around 20-25 actors, full Replica and Original German and American WWII uniforms and equipment.

Vehicles

 – 2 – WWII German motorcycles with side car and built-in weaponry.

 – 1 – WWII German Kübelwagen

– 2 – British Spitfires or American Bombers, I need to decide, more likely the American Bombers.

Location+Props

I Have been given permission by “Der Windhund” group to do all my filming at Ashdown – WWII camp – Evesham on their training weekend, on the 12-14 March. At Ashdown they have permission to use pyrotechnics, I also have a forest to use for some of my scenes, plus all these props:

– Nissen Huts.

– Anderson.

– Morrison & Stanton Air raid shelters all over-looked by the Watchtower.

– Replica WWII bunkers.

and more that is currently being established and agreed in budget.

311’mc – Post 4 – The Holy Grail that is “The Cross of Iron”

•January 31, 2010 • Leave a Comment

In 1943, in the Russian front, the decorated leader Rolf Steiner is promoted to Sergeant after another successful mission. Meanwhile the upper-class and arrogant Prussian Captain Hauptmann Stransky is assigned as the new commander of his squad. After a bloody battle of Steiner’s squad against the Russian troops led by the brave Lieutenant Meyer that dies in the combat, the coward Stransky claims that he led his squad against the Russian and requests to be awarded with the Iron of Cross to satisfy his personal ambition together with his aristocratic family. Stransky gives the names of Steiner and of the homosexual Lieutenant Triebig as witnesses of his accomplishment, but Steiner, who has problems with the chain of command in the army and with the arrogance of Stransky, refuses to participate in the fraud. When Colonel Brandt gives the order to leave the position in the front, Stransky does not retransmit the order to Steiner’s squad, and they are left alone surrounded by the enemy and having to fight to survive.

This is a very useful tool for me not only with the possible ideas it throws up, camera angles, lighting and special effects, the use of pyrotechnics but also the historical information it brings, how the German uniform looked, which guns were used, all these little details, the way they speak German with English, all add up to make a realistic and successful project of work.

311’mc – Post 3 – Inspirational Mediums

•January 28, 2010 • Leave a Comment

The 1st medium I thought of when the idea for my final piece came up was, “Saving Private Ryan

Saving Private Ryan opens with a 30-minute war scene that is without a doubt one of the finest half-hours ever on film. This sequence, a soldier’s-eye view of the D-Day invasion of Normandy, is amazing not only in terms of technique but in the depth of viewer reaction it uses. Spielberg doesnt hold anything back to the viewer of the horrors of battle, using every way he can to show the chaos and lives that were lost.

After fighting in the battle of Omaha beach D-Day, veteran Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) is sent on a WWII rescue mission, he is supposed to find paratrooper Private James Ryan (Matt Damon) and bring him home . Ryan’s three brothers have all been killed in action and the Army wants him returned to his family. The paratroops of the 82nd Airborne are scattered far and wide though, and finding Ryan proves far from easy.

The 2nd Medium was “Valkyrie

In Nazi Germany during World War II, as the tide turned in favor of The Allies, a cadre of senior German officers and politicians desperately plot to topple the Nazi regime before the nation is crushed in a near-inevitable defeat. To this end, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, an Army officer convinced he must save Germany from Hitler, is recruited to mastermind a real plan. To do so, he arranges for the internal emergency measure, Operation: Valkyrie, to be changed to enable his fellows to seize control of Berlin after the assassination of the Fuhrer. However, even as the plan is put into action, a combination of bad luck and human failings conspire on their own to create a tragedy that would prolong the greater one gripping Europe.

And finally a bit of a way off from the mainstream two before is this “A Soldiers War” produced by Staffordshire University, this is good but not quite the caliber to what I have planned.
